This course introduces the kurinuki technique, which originated in Japan, whereby the shape of an object is created by carving pieces of varying sizes from a larger lump of clay. This technique sets aside a focus on performance, emphasising instead a relaxed approach and intuitive design – this course truly invites you to take a moment to connect with the clay. During the course, you’ll have time to make one kurinuki cup, bowl or small vase. If you wish, you can familiarise yourself with the technique and find inspiration in advance from the Pinterest board we’ve created.
No prior experience of pottery is required to join the workshop; we’ll start by exploring the materials, tools and work stages together. You’ll have black and light-coloured clay at your disposal. The natural shades of the clay are beautiful, but if you wish, the course leader can glaze your pieces with a clear or white glaze, making them food-safe. Your finished pieces will be left at the workshop to dry, be fired and glazed, and will be ready for collection in about a month’s time.
