Salla Kemppi: Collection of Endless Thoughts

Collection of Endless Thoughts consists of colorful, multi-material sculptures. The gestures of collecting and organizing are repeated in the works, slowly moving towards hiding and decay. The materials used include rocks, thread, recycled textiles, glass beads, and wood.

The works of the exhibition are a manifestation of these ponderings.

For me, the sculptures are a tool of thinking. My work relies heavily on repetition, and my methods are slow and mechanical. However, I get bored easily, and my work begins to live and transform along with the process. Repetition helps me to concentrate, and it requires and cultivates patience. The tangible act of organizing, like placing of the cloth balls, helps me to organize my thoughts. This is how my thoughts find their place and turn into an object I can examine from outside of the self.”

Salla Kemppi (1993, Kouvola, Finland) is a Turku-based sculptor who is interested in the questions of temporality and humaneness. Kemppi uses traditional needlework techniques – like macrame and sowing – to look at the possibilities they offer and how to broaden their use in sculpting. The work has been supported by Finnish Art Society. The Finnish Heritage Agency supports the exhibitions of Iso Galleria.
