It’s me. But it’s also fame and intimacy. It’s physical and emotional boundary-crossing and attempts to navigate in the spectacle of society. The exhibition includes textile and mixed media sculpture as well as video and is dedicated to Superstars and the ones wanting to be one but with their awkward yet obvious presence tends to get caught in the gap betweendesire and contempt.

Irina Laaja (b. 1989 in Vasa) mainly work with textile and mixed media sculpture but also photo, video and performance.

The body is often present and its complexity and signification fascinates her; how something so concreteand straightforward can also be so complicated and difficult. How views of, and definitions of, sexuality, normality and obscenity are woven in and through our physique and subconscious.

Irinas practice is both conceptual and confessional with a strong focus on the process, the body and the experiences that stem from it. Material selection plays a big role; from an environmental aspect but also from an attraction to the limitations and challenges of working with recycled materials, and she’s interested in the emotional and intellectual history of objects.

Irina has a background in Fashion design with studies at Tillskärarakademin Gothenburg (2010) andwork as an independent designer in Berlin. She has a Bachelors degree in Art History (2014) as well as a Master in Fine Arts (2020). Her work has been exhibited at galleries and institutions bothin Sweden as well as internationally. The World Famous Superstar exhibition is supported by Suomalais-ruotsalainen Kulttuurirahasto.

An artist talk will take place on Sunday, April 12, from 3 to 4 PM. Welcome!
