Anna uschanov: Time of Forest

Dry leaves rustle under my feet, the road hums somewhere in the distance.
My gaze start to slow down.

Fallen leaves on the ground. Like something unfinished.

Wind speaks in tongues I do not know.
It makes everything around me vibrate and move.

I lean into a tree trunk, and it starts to sway slowly.
A spider climbs up my leg.
Mosquitoes, pine needles, and small sticks dig through clothes and onto the skin.
I stand up and start to run.

My work needs slowness and regularity. The rhythm of nature, old forests, and seasons is not the same as people’s. Looking closely, observing requires time and space. I am intrigued by the idea of nature surveys through art. My work looks at the moments spent in the forest and in the cycle of seasons, where observation and experience intertwine.

Anna Uschanov (1985) is a Porvoo-based painter and puppeteer. She graduated from Free Art School and from Turku Art Academy’s Puppetry school. Playing with scale, lengthening and shrinking it, is essential to here work. She creates different sceneries and material entities by feeling, studying, and combining different materials. Uschanov never steps too far from her own sphere of experience in her work: her themes are often based on observations in local environment and nature. For Uschanov, art at its best is a bridge between people and the neural pathways within.
