March 27–29: Advanced Mezzotint Course
Instructor Petra Kallio
Fri 6–8 p.m., Sat–Sun 10 a.m.–3 p.m.

Mezzotint is an old metal engraving technique in which the surface of a metal plate is roughened and then polished to prepare it for printing. During the printing process, the ink adheres to the roughest areas of the plate, leaving the polished areas lighter. Finally, the image is printed onto damp paper using a gravure press.
Mezzotint can be used to achieve a rich tonal range and a magically soft finish. The plate is worked with a curved, fine-toothed graver, which is moved over the plate several times to create a velvety, completely black background for the subject. The image is created by smoothing the surface with a burnisher and a polishing iron, and the more the surface is smoothed, the lighter the tone.
A completely glossy surface is the color of pure paper. The work is therefore done from dark to light, unlike other metal engraving techniques.
The course is suitable for those who have taken the beginner’s course in mezzotint and for first-timers.
