In August, Overflow III, an exhibition of the Art House’s own artists, will once again take over the Main Hall. The exhibition, which is opening for the third time, has achieved classic status.

“It was a classic already the first time round but the future was not sure yet then so no one dared call it a classic at that point. Now we do. A classic remains important and relevant year after year, according to one definition. Moving on to the third, we can be open. We have our place.”

In the field of art there is still the same ponder in 2024 as there was in 1974. The classical question: Is there a message here? The easy answer is: Yes there is. When there are almost forty artists co-present and the only theme is one house, the answer is to be found in the heart of art. Art has a self value and it is a diverse field. In that field one of the key messages is freedom of expression. In both the global and domestic atmosphere of 2024, this is a particularly powerful message.

As in freedom of speech, the result is a re-appropriation of traditional platitude. Freedom requires responsibility. Freedom of speech is limited by other legislation such as on defamation, protection of privacy and incitement against ethnic groups. In the name of freedom of expression, these would equally be abuses of freedom of expression. But in the field of art, we have an even greater responsibility: Our job is simply to make good art. It is demanding work. And that is what classics are made of.
