In her exhibition Suojassa (In shield) Tuuli Oikkonen explores the multiple layers of life through spiritual, social, and physical perspectives. The inspiration for this series began in the spring, as Oikkonen observed the melting sea ice. How even the thinnest, most fractured ice shields the life beneath it. But also holds back. Until the sea becomes free and vulnerable again. Where is the fine line between being protected and free under one’s shield, and becoming isolated within a bubble?

Suojassa exhibition consists of large-scale abstract paintings and ceramic sculptures. Oikkonen creates her paintings on the floor, applying overlapping thin layers of very diluted paint. Her process is both intuitive and intense, which she describes as an exploration beyond conscious thought. Working with clay serves as a crucial counterbalance for Oikkonen, providing a slow, grounding process that remains free and unplanned.

During the Night of the Arts on 15 August, Gallery Aski will be open from 12-22. You can experience a performance of sound and painting art from 20-21. During the performance, you can visit the gallery on a rolling basis or follow the performance throughout. Free entry, welcome!
